Creating a Bunded Floor for the Hand Brewing Company

The UltraSyntec team was recently approached by Head Brewer Kate at the Hand Brewing Company in West Worthing, Sussex, to provide a quotation for a brand-new brewery floor and drainage system. This independent brewing company is renowned for creating award-winning, vegan-friendly craft beers to please every palate – we were delighted to respond!

Brushing up on our brewing credentials

We were also delighted to hear that Kate had been inundated with recommendations for UltraSyntec and our flooring solutions across a variety of online brewing forums. UltraSyntec have vast experience installing floors in the food and beverage sector. Will, our Sales Director, responded quickly to the enquiry, jumping in his car and heading to the South Coast for an initial site visit.

We love our brewery projects, having previously installed a floor at Thwaites Brewery and were determined to provide the right flooring solution at the right price. Once Kate was happy with the competitive, non-nonsense quotation we submitted, we began to mobilise for the task. 

Combining the right ingredients

Our teams attended on-site and commenced works by first marking out where the required drainage channel should be situated and where we needed to dig out. Time was of the essence; the necessary trenches were dug, all pipes and drainage systems installed, the area was backfilled and then concreted within two days.

Creating a bund to contain spills

The client also wanted the area to be bunded, using kerbs to create safe containment to capture any leaks or spills from the brewing process, and to segregate these from the tap room, which sits adjacent to the new brewing area.

To achieve this, concrete kerbs were installed right around the brewing area and sealed using Pumadur TF, a Resdev polyurethane seal coat developed and manufactured by resin flooring specialists Resdev. As well as providing excellent protection for flooring areas requiring good wear resistance, Pumadur TF was selected not only to seal the kerbs we had installed but also to provide the required aesthetic appeal to the perimeter of the new brewing area.

Screeding the brewing area

Once the drainage installation works and the bund formation were completed, it was time for the screed. We pumped a fast-drying sand-and-cement SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) screed with fibre reinforcement to form a single envelope with falls to the central drainage system. This ensured that water and any other excess liquid would flow naturally and directly into the newly installed drainage system.

And finally, to the flooring itself

To complete the project, it was time for us to do what we always refer to as our bread and butter, the work we do day in and day out. For this phase of the project, we had specified Pumadur RT, a heavy-duty polyurethane screed also developed and manufactured by Resdev.

Installing a heavy-duty resin screed is the best approach for environments such as brewing. It is hygienic, hard-wearing and slip-resistant, ensuring safe movement of personnel around the brewing area.

The total area measured 120m^2, and the project was completed on-site in just eight days. The team at The Hand Brewing Company is delighted with the finish and with all the work carried out by UltraSyntec.
