Concrete floor sealants installed by UltraSyntec provide tailored solutions for sealing concrete slabs, preventing concrete erosion and issues caused by dust rising from the surface.
Adding a concrete sealant can also make the surface easier to clean when combined with suitable cleaning regimes.
Eliminating surface dusting was the objective for a recent project completed by the UltraSyntec team in Dove Valley Park, Derbyshire. The premises were used to manufacture precision instruments for the medical equipment industry, so it was imperative to avoid dust contamination. An appropriate concrete sealant provided the best solution for this application.
What is a concrete floor sealant?
A concrete floor sealant is the most cost-effective way to seal a concrete slab. Concrete slabs may look solid to the human eye; however, they contain tiny pinholes and other small defects.
A concrete floor sealant will penetrate the concrete slab and form a sealed layer on top, once cured. Concrete floor sealants are suitable for application to new concrete slabs once the full curing period is complete, to existing concrete slabs, or as part of a wider flooring solution.
Concrete sealants are recommended for areas subject only to pedestrian and very light vehicular traffic.
What preparation is required?
Only minimal initial preparation is required when installing a concrete sealant. For contractor applications, the area will first be thoroughly vacuumed with an industrial vacuum to ensure the surface is clean and free of debris before the specified sealant is applied.
The UltraSyntec team will request that clients or facilities managers remove any furniture or items that are not permanently fixed, to ensure operatives can apply the product easily and effectively. The concrete slab must also be completely free of moisture before sealant application.
How is a concrete sealant installed?
A concrete sealant is installed by pouring the appropriate product directly onto the concrete slab and mopping the product around the area of installation. The product is then backrolled to ensure correct coverage and a uniform surface finish.
Applications
Typical environments where concrete sealants can be applied include large industrial units, light engineering facilities and warehouses.
At UltraSyntec, we favour a product called Sika ProSeal W. This water-based concrete sealant is completely safe for on-site use when working around various products. Its solvent-free composition means there are no issues with fumes or other tainting substances.
The benefits of concrete floor sealants
- Rapid installation times and reduced downtime, with installation coverage anywhere from 500m2 to 750m2 per day
- Fast lead times from as little as one week from initial site visit, availability dependent
- Prevents concrete erosion
- Prevents dust from rising up from the concrete slab
- Cost-effective
- Protects the concrete slab, preventing costly concrete repair bills
- Makes the surface much easier to clean, with appropriate cleaning routines
Summary
When correctly specified and applied, concrete floor sealants provide a simple and cost-effective solution to problems caused by excessive dusting from concrete slabs. They also help protect the concrete surface and facilitate easy and effective cleaning regimes.
