Fast and Effective Garage Workshop Flooring Installation

Garage workshop flooring is subject to constant attack from aggressive materials, vehicular movements and impact damage. When the Skoda dealership in Preston was looking to carry out refresher coating works to their workshop floor to maintain the required levels of safety, performance and aesthetics, they called in the UltraSyntec team, already on the company’s trusted supplier list from earlier projects.

As well as the refresher coatings, the dealership required brand new demarcation linings to define the battery testing and changing area in the line with their strict health and safety regulations. This work needed to be completed over a specific two-day weekend window in line with operational requirements for Skoda.

Matching tight timescales

As this was already a particularly busy period for UltraSyntec with several projects underway across the UK, the company made the decision to drafted in two experienced and trusted subcontractors to ensure the work was completed on time and to UltraSyntec’s high quality standards.

With just a two-day window to complete the work, the team had to be both fast and efficient. The substrate was mechanically prepared by removing all existing coatings using a DFG 300 three-phase diamond grinder attached to a vacuum, achieving minimal dusting to protect adjacent equipment. The entire 425m² floor area was then thoroughly cleaned using a CFM 137 industrial vacuum, creating the right environment for application of the coatings.

Floor repairs and demarcation hatching

Due to the heavy-duty vehicular and pedestrian traffic experienced within the workshop, repairs were required to sections of the floor and joints, completed using a hardwearing two-pack epoxy filler. Alongside this work, in the battery testing area the flooring was taped accurately for installation of the safety demarcation lines and hatchings to be laid within the battery area.

High performance, abrasion resistant floor coating products

Once the preparation work was complete, the team roller applied two coats of KDR Resin Systems EpoCoat HB, a high build coating in an attractive light grey colour, across the main area, allowing time for curing between each coat to achieve the best possible finish. EpoCoat HB has an established reputation for resistance to damage by vehicular movements.

Once the floor was fully cured, demarcation lines were laid to separate the workshop areas, with EpoCoat HB used again to form yellow and black hatched markings in the battery testing area.

This was a challenging project in terms of mobilisation timescales; the quote was approved on the Wednesday and work began on the Saturday. The client was extremely happy with the quality of the finished floor and UltraSyntec’s ability to turn the work around so quickly and to such a high standard, and plans to call on the company again for any further resin flooring requirements.
