UltraSyntec has completed a large and prestigious project on behalf of Nelson-based contractor, developer and investor Barnfield Construction, one of the company’s biggest clients.
When Barnfield Construction began work on a full rebuild of the industrial estate located at Sovereign Way in Huyton, Liverpool, they called in the UltraSyntec team to propose a robust and long-term flooring solution for two areas of units on the site.
Strategically located close to the M62/M57 intersection, just over nine miles from Liverpool city centre and within easy reach of other industrial conurbations including Warrington and Manchester, Sovereign Way provides a perfect base for businesses in the area, serving major infrastructure projects like the Liverpool 2 container terminal and the Mersey Gateway bridge.
Flooring a total of 10,000m2
UtraSyntec worked on two units as an integral part of this important refurbishment project. The first area, comprising Units F1 to F4, was completed as a wide-open space measuring a total of 7,000m2. The concrete substrate here was in a state of significant disrepair and required extensive treatment to restore it to a pristine condition, suitable for use.
Work began with the team captive shot blasting the entire area to provide a suitable key for the proposed flooring materials. Once this preparation work was completed, an industrial levelling compound was applied across the area to a depth of 20mm to create a resilient, level finish.
Working with the new CemSmooth range from KDR Resin Systems
This was an interesting part of the project for the team, as they partnered with innovative resin flooring manufacturers KDR Resin Systems for one of the first large-scale applications of the company’s new CemSmooth range.
The new range consists of a CemSmooth primer, the Cemsmooth base and a CemSmooth topcoat. For this project, UltraSyntec used the primer, two coats of CemSmooth base and one coat of CemSmooth top screed, combining their technical skills with the performance potential of the new flooring materials to totally transform the area.
To complete this, UltraSyntec applied KDR Resin’s EpoCoat HB to the entire 7,000m2 area. This solvent-free, high-build epoxy resin floor coating provides excellent levels of chemical and abrasion resistance, resulting in a coloured gloss finish. It also offers fast application properties and creates an attractive and decorative seamless finish.
Finishing the project
The second area, Unit C, was a far more straightforward project for the UltraSyntec site team. Here, the existing floor was in an acceptable condition and did not require significant repairs or a levelling compound. Two coats of KDR Resin’s EpoCoat HB were laid over a total area of 3,000m2, providing a robust and resilient finish ideal for applications including industrial, warehousing, food processing and general manufacturing.
