Fast Cure, Tough Resin Floor for Colletts Vehicle Workshops
With a reputation for providing high-performance installations for challenging industrial and commercial flooring requirements, Ultrasyntec is often approached to devise individual solutions to match very specific applications. When Colletts – a leading Halifax-based haulage company – were experiencing issues with their main garage floor, they called in Ultrasyntec to recommend long-term refurbishment options.
Resilient flooring to withstand spillages
The floor in question was in a poor state, caused by years of inevitable oil spillages and pothole damage created by the heavy machinery used in the facility. The issue was further complicated by the fact that this is Colletts’ main vehicle breakdown and service shed, in use 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so an important consideration was how to minimise downtime yet provide a flooring solution capable of handling these aggressive conditions into the future. It was a clear that a fast cure resin system was required.
All completed within a five-day shutdown window
Ultrasyntec devised a solution requiring a five-day shutdown window, which matched Colletts’ operational requirements. The scope of work included deep cleaning for the floor to remove the oil residues, repairing the pot holes and laying a new flooring system to create an aesthetically pleasing finish as well as the levels of durability required by this environment.
Ultrasyntec began the floor preparation process by captive shot blasting the floor using powered machinery to remove 70% of the contamination, followed by more laborious manual scabler and diamond grinding processes to remove the final 30%. The pot holes were then filled in using Pumabulk, a heavy duty polyurethane mortar manufactured by Resdev which is capable of filling in deep holes and cures overnight in line with the limited time window for this project.
Quick cure, long lasting Pumashield epoxy flooring
Once the floor was prepared, Ultrasyntec installed a ‘high build’ epoxy flooring system, made up of a low viscosity epoxy primer to ensure excellent adherence to the substrate and two coats of Resdev’s Pumashield epoxy coating. Developed for use on concrete and polymer modified cementitious screeds, Pumashield creates a tough, hard wearing protective floor finish with an easy-clean surface ideal for automotive workshops. In addition, Pumashield offers the quick cure properties necessary to get the floor in question back into operation within the time specified.
Demarcation for safety
Ultrasyntec then finished off the floor by adding demarcation lines and other safety markings using Resdev’s Pumatect P, a specialist line marking products, including guider lines to assist the drivers when reversing into the area to position them correctly over the pits and high visibility chevrons to alert all users on pit edge areas.
The entire project was completed and put back into use within five days, as specified by Colletts, creating a tough and resilient flooring surface which is also easy to clean and will provide a pleasing aesthetic finish for many years to come.
