UltraSyntec Install A New Resin Swimming Pool Surround for Bournemouth Collegiate School

BSC completed resin swimming pool surround with drainage

Resin flooring systems are equally at home in leisure and sports applications, combining longevity with non-slip characteristics and aesthetic appeal. The UltraSyntec team were contracted to complete an extensive swimming pool refurbishment project involving a new resin swimming pool surround for Bournemouth Collegiate School in Dorset.

The complete new pool surround

Bournemouth Collegiate School (BCS) is an independent school in Dorset, which focuses on providing an all-round holistic education, placing equal importance on academic and personal achievements and developments for pupils. Aiming to deliver ‘Education with Character’, the school prides itself on excellent facilities and quality services.

Identified floor hygiene and safety issues

In the school swimming pool building, the existing pool surround floor covering, consisting of the original tiles, had become defective, resulting in identified hygiene and safety issues. In consultation with UltraSyntec, the school’s facilities management team requested a specification for a resin solution consisting of a new, durable and easy-to-clean finish incorporating excellent levels of slip resistance to ensure the safest possible movements for the pupils around the pool.

Extensive preparation work

Before applying any screed and resin, the entire area required extensive preparation work. The UltraSyntec team first removed all the existing tiles using industrial breakers. Once the defective tiles had been taken away, the remaining tile grout was also removed using an industrial diamond grinder attached to an industrial vacuum to ensure minimal dust in the pool area.

Once these preparation works were complete, the team installed the specified screed to falls, creating effective drainage. This allows surface water accumulating around the pool to drain to the central low point and towards stainless steel drain gullies from ACO Drainage.

Multi-layered flooring system

When the screed had fully cured, the team turned their attention to the full resin system. The material specified for this project was a resin flake, a multi-layered flooring system combining epoxy resin with decorative flakes. The material is durable, creates a visually appealing finish and offers high levels of slip resistance. In addition, it is resistant to wear and impact damage and provides a seamless and hygienic solution with no gaps or cracks to trap bacteria.

Before installation of the resin flake system, one coat of a damp-proof membrane was roller-applied to the new polymer screed. This was followed by a roller-applied coat of the final high-build epoxy coating, featuring air-blown epoxy flakes within the coating to create the desired visual effect.

Enhanced slip resistance

To complete the project, the UltraSyntec team applied two coats of Resdev Pumadur DD, a chemical-resistant, UV-stable polyurethane seal coat incorporating aluminium oxide to provide the enhanced slip resistance required.

The Bournemouth Collegiate School resin swimming pool surround was yet another UltraSyntec project completed on time and with excellent levels of customer satisfaction, in line with our company philosophy, “Flooring Industry with Quality since 1996.”
