Tough and Resilient Aircraft Hangar Flooring Systems

Creating the right specification for aircraft hangar flooring presents a number of significant challenges. Whilst cost is an obvious issue, many other aspects must also be taken into consideration in order to ensure the selected flooring is durable and fit for purpose.

Mechanical strength is an important issue. Aircraft hangar flooring must be capable of withstanding the considerable weight of the aircraft using the floor. As well as safely handling of other wheeled vehicles and resisting impact damage from tools and sharp objects.

Chemical and slip resistant hangar floor

It is also important to ensure the chosen flooring is resistant to chemical compounds commonly found around aircraft including aviation fuel and hydraulic fluids. For some areas, it may be worth considering incorporating antistatic properties, which can discharge any electrical build-up and protect expensive equipment stored there.

Easy clean, slip-resistant flooring is vital for safety, practicality, aesthetics and cost effectiveness. A surface with a good gloss reflects light better and can contribute towards creating the right lighting conditions in the hangar.

All of these issues were considered by the UltraSyntec team when specifying a flooring system for a new Rubb aircraft hangar. Rubb hangars use membrane products and post-construction galvanised welded frames for high-speed installation, providing high-performance, flexible buildings for both civil and military aviation environments.

For this application, slip-resistant flooring to BS7976 was required, combined with advanced levels of durability, and resistance to chemical compounds and solvents.

The specification created by UltraSyntec included two layers of DPM (damp proof primer), which would ingress into the existing concrete runway surface, providing a tough and resistant barrier against moisture content or other contaminated products.

Two further coats of high build epoxy coating were then applied to create a semi-gloss surface which is designed to exceed a 10-year life expectancy.

The owners of the aircraft hangar also have the option of installing demarcation directional and safety lines and markings which will bond directly onto the surface, with no need for further preparation.
